I'm considering buying either an imported Honda Odyssey or a Toyota Previa, both around 80k to 90k kilometres and both odometer verified. Is there any difference between the two in terms of relaibility, known problems, etc?

Thanks.

I am assuming the Previa is rear wheel drive (RWD) and the Odyssey is front wheel drive (FWD). If this is true then I would go for the Odyssey.

The engine layout and position is somewhat complicated on the Previa and access during service or repairs is via underneath the vehicle while the Odyseey has the more conventional front wheel drive engine position. The Odyssey will also drive better as it is based on a car platform.

If however, you are looking at a front wheel drive Previa (about Model Year 2000 onwards), it almost becomes too close to call and personal preferences on seat comfort and layout etc can make the difference.

The improvements in the FWD Previa over the earlier RWD are massive, and that's where your comparison with the Odyssey should be made.

The Odyssey also runs a cam belt so if you are looking at a vehicle around 100,000kms or 5 years of age then you may be up for an expensive maintenance bill if the belt has not already been replaced.

Both FWD vehicles come with different engine sizes as well. You can have 4 or 6 cylinder options so make sure you compare apples with apples in terms of performance.
