I am currently looking at purchasing a new car, in the hopes of reducing my current fuel bill. I have a 45km commute to town everyday.

I can't decide whether to bite the bullet and choose a more expensive Hyundai Getz 1.4 Diesel (with more safety options), or go for something like a Suzuki Swift (cheap and cheerful). The driving I do is mainly open-road, and although I looked at a Kia Picanto, I thought the 1.1L engine would be too small. I currently drive a '98 1.6L Toyota.

Could you please give me some advice on what to choose, or any other suggestions on what is out there?

The Swift is certainly the talk of the town at the moment. Sales have been unbelievable.

It's a great looking vehicle and does the job for most people looking for a small economical and safe car. Depending on the model you go for, it also has a high safety spec level, equal in comparison to the Getz.

They sell a base model for $16990 (manual) which is missing side and curtain airbags but still represents great value for money.

Remember with the Getz diesel you are required to pay road user charges (approx $32 per 1,000km) and this should be factored into your running costs.

There are so many choices in the small car class, all good value.

The Mazda2 is another small car definitely worth a look.

It has picked up several awards in recent times, including the 2008 AA small car of the year.
