We are planning to buy a used car but are confused over which model to buy.

We need:

1. Toyota / Honda / Ford / Mazda / Nissan are our preferred manufacturer.
2. Hatch back?
3. We need to fit 2 kayaks on roof
4. We were thinking of buying a 4x4 but are afraid its fuel consumption and maintenance may be too high
5. We were also thinking of a Wagon but I find it difficult to drive a large car

Does a Mazda3 Hatch (2000cc) meet our needs?

I think you will struggle to get your kayaks on the roof of the Mazda3.

The new 4x4 type vehicles are no more expensive to maintain than the vehicles you mention but their fuel consumption may be a little higher.

Have a look at the NZ new Nissan Wingroad which is a station wagon that's not too big or a Toyota Corolla wagon.
