I am downsizing from a Hondy Odyssey 7 seater now that kids are grown up and want to buy a small (eg hatchback) reliable car under $12,000 (eg $10,000) mainly for around the city use. I don't know much about cars but it would help to have a few makes, years, models to look out for. Any suggestions?

The Suzuki Swift 1.4L or 1.5L and 2007 and newer will be a good choice to consider - the 1.2L and 1.3L versions are a bit underpowered so you might want to avoid these. The 2008 or newer Mazda Demio/2 fitted with the 1.5L motor as well as the 2009 and newer 1.6L Ford Fiesta are also good small hatchback choices to consider in this price range.
