I would like to purchase a car with the following criteria: it is safe, to accommodate 2 adults and 2 children, economical but ok for open road trips, and most importantly has a high seat.

We currently have a Nissan Maxima and I find it uncomfortable (I have arthritis) on long trips as my knees are above my hips. I have sat in a friends Rav 4 which was much better as the seats are higher so you end up sitting in the correct position. (The maxima is also quite thirsty).

I don't want to spend a lot, maybe up to $12,000.

If you want to stay with the Nissan brand then have a look at the X-Trail. You may have to pay a little more than anticipated to get a good example with moderate km's, but it may be worth it in the long run whatever you buy.

Phone up your local Nissan dealer to see if they anything in their used car stock.

A vehicle sold new in NZ would be my preference also. They are a very underrated vehicle and do the basics well and would appear to meet all your needs.

Apart from that the RAV4 is also worth consideration especially as you have already tried it out re seating position etc.

Once again a visit or phone call to your local dealer may be a good place to start.

Be careful if you buy privately, do checks for money owing and a pre purchase inspection is always recommended.
