I would like to know what vehicles I might need to purchase for towing a boat in excess of 3000kg on a tandem braked trailer. Can you also confirm the licence class that you need for above 4500kg

It depends on budget and the type of vehicle you require for purposes other than towing.
However, there aren't many vehicles rated beyond 3,000kg, but a few that would be capable are some of the late model utes such as Ford Ranger, Mazda BT-50 and Holden Colorado. Also some of the large SUVs such as Toyota Landcruiser, Nissan Patrol etc.
You will need a Class 2 license for over 4,500kg.

I think you will find that this changed sometime ago and that now you can
use a class 1 up to 6000kg.

Yes, of course you are correct and I was thinking of the old regulations. However, 4,500kg still applies to learner and restricted license holders.
