Hi

I need to purchase a vehicle (SUV) to tow a horsefloat. My horse weighs 500 kgs and the horse float is a double tandem wheeled weighing 750kgs and has its own brakes. As the float is a double we need to allow for another 500 kg horse. What is the ideal and safest diesel engine size to tow safely.

The Toyota Landcruiser Prado with a 3.0L turbo diesel engine. With a 2.5 ton maximum braked trailer towing capacity you will be towing safely and there will be enough low down torque to pull the load.

Thanks Donovan - am looking at a 2005 Diesel Prado but it isn't turbo - does that matter? Also off to look at a diesel VW Toureg which is a 3.0ltr but again not turbo. Also should I be concerned about servicing costs with European diesels?

I would be surprised if the 2005 model Prado with a 3.0L diesel engine was a non-turbo - this applies to the VW Toureg with a 3.0L diesel too. Most modern diesel engines have turbochargers fitted to them. You should confirm this with the seller or dealer. A non-turbo model (unless petrol) will not be an ideal choice for towing a tandem horse float.

The VW Toureg will do the job but it's a luxury vehicle in comparison and it will cost more in repairs and servicing.

Thank you, that is most helpful.
