If you are buying from a registered motor vehicle trader (not by auction or pvt sale) for personal use the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) will cover you by law for a reasonable amount of time - so depending on the vehicle's mileage, age and purchase price the CGA could either cover you for a few days or months - possibly more than the three months the dealer has offered. The timeframe isn't defined and if you ended up in a dispute with the dealer due to a fault with the car the court would need to decide what is reasonable.

An extended warranty could assist you when you are faced with a major repair so it's useful to have but sometimes you never use it and its money down the drain.
