Hi there,

We are currently looking for a smaller car that is fuel efficient but doesn't have a CVT. At the moment, looking at a Toyota Ist (1.5 to 2.0 cc), Toyota Vitz (from my understanding some are not CVT?), Toyota Runx/Corolla and Toyota BB.

Are there other small hatchback cars out there that are fuel efficient but doesn't have CVT. Our budget is about $7500 to $8000.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks.

The CVT transmissions were designed to improve fuel efficiency but unfortunately they haven't always had a good reputation for reliability. Although, we are told that they have improved on newer models.

You could have a look at the Mazda Demio, Nissan Pulsar and Mazda Familia - but as you have previously stated it's best to stay clear of vehicles with a CVT in this year range.

Thanks for that! Will add those suggestions to the list.

By the way, can you confirm if a Toyota IST has a CVT? We are currently looking at one but seller unable to confrim if it has CVT? Google didn't help either :(

Thank you!

From 2007 the IST was fitted with CVT transmissions but earlier (pre-2007) 1.3L and 1.5L models use conventional automatic transmissions. An AA Pre-Purchase inspection will confirm this for you - you should consider getting one done.
