Hi,
I'm new to buying cars and I need a little advice as to what to do.

I have found a private buyer selling TOYOTA CURREN Coupe 1996.

Firstly, I have asked whether they have a full service history and the seller responded that his dad, being a mechanic, always serviced the vehicle. Should I be weary about this?

Furthermore, the seller also told me that the cambelt needs replacing at 100000 (it's odemetre is currently on 87000). How expensive would this be? The asking price is $4500.

Please help!

Grace.

If the mileage is genuinely 87,000km, and the vehicle is in good condition, then the price is fair for either a 1.8L or 2.0L model. Most mechanics do service their own vehicles and it's not uncommon. You will have to decide whether to trust that the vehicle has been serviced on a regular basis or if he has receipts for the parts purchases it might put your mind at ease. To replace the cambelt only should cost around $350 (depending where you have it done) and if the water pump and coolant need replacing at the same time it will push the price up.
