I have a 1995 NZ new Nissan Maxima (old shape 1990-1995 model) which has 128,000kms on the clock.

Nothing has gone wrong with this car during my ownership (purchased at 80,000kms from my father).

My question is: should I look at replacing the cam belt?

After browsing the internet, I have read that some Maxima's have a chain rather than a belt.

Does the NZ new model have a belt or a chain?

Also what problems show I be looking out for in this model or should I look at selling while I can for a more fuel efficient car?

Our records show the Nissan Maxima engine of that year (VG30E) is fitted with a timing belt not a chain.

I strongly suggest getting it into your garage to confirm this and have the belt replaced if that is the case. It will become an expensive repair bill if the belt snaps, which if it hasn't been replaced already, is a strong possibility.

The Maxima has been a reliable model, the only common problem on the older models was a tendency to crack exhaust manifolds and the securing studs becoming rusted solid. All up it can be an expensive repair should this ever occur.

At 128,000 km's I would also have the transmission fluid checked.

It's still got plenty of life left, but you should expect a higher fuel bill than say a Nissan Pulsar or Toyota Corolla.
