Can you tell me what happens when buying a diesel vehicle with outstanding Road User Charges (RUC) owing.

The vehicle is being sold in a, as-is where-is condition.

if I decide to buy, do I have to pay all outstanding RUC fees which amount to approximately 20,000km of travel?

It is the responsibility of the seller to ensure the Road User charges are up to date.

The new owner will become responsible however, for any expired RUC charges if this is not sorted out prior to the sale. They will also be liable for a fine which can be up to 3 times the value of the expired kilometres.

In your case, I would suggest the seller either pays the outstanding RUC charges, or you take off the cost of bringing the RUC up to date (approx $720) from the sale price.

If you choose the later do not drive the vehicle until the outstanding RUC is paid.
