Hi,
I am considering to purchase a new car and have narrowed down the choices to a Ford Focus Trend and the MK 7 Volkswagen Golf comfortline model. Both are brand new cars.

Test driving both the cars, both are very similar however the interior of the Golf is much better than the Focus. Prices for both the new cars are very similar as well.

My main concerns are media news that the volkswagen has been having issues with the DCG automatic gear box, and costly repairs could be involved. I guess the 3 year warranty may cover this in the 3 year period but what if problems develop after the warranty period has expired.

Also are there major differences with the servicing and maintenance costs between the two cars.

In your opinion which is a better car to purchase?

Many thanks!

The problems (DSG recall) were with earlier DSG transmissions and VW took ownership of the problem and repaired it.

The DSG gearbox shifts quicker than conventional automatic transmissions and the internals are similiar to a manual 'box - although controlled automatically - which helps it to achieve its good fuel economy figures.

I would agree with the comment about the interior as the Ford's looks a bit flashy whereas the Golf's interior is uncluttered.

They are both good choices and it comes down to personal preference as to which one to buy. Dynamically they drive well and both are appealing to look at.

European cars do have a reputation for being dearer for major service items and repairs but the general service items costs should be similiar.

Both vehicles require the use of a minimum 95 octane fuel too.
