Hi Guys,

We have a Toyota Vitz 1.5 but looking for a bigger second car to use on long trips ( we're avid trampers) and for next year when we have family over

We've narrowed down the search to the Altezza. Currently looking at 2 models, the AS200 and AS300 Gita. Both are 2001 and around 130kms. The AS200 has been in NZ for the last 6 years and has a service record- all belts been done. The AS300 has been in NZ for 2 years and cambelt has been done and owner says it has been serviced. There is a $500 difference between both cars with the AS200 being cheaper. However, the AS300 has a 5spd AT and traction control which the sedan does not. Is it worthwhile trumping for the AS300?

The only fishhook is that the AS300 is in Taupo so will have to get a pre purchase inspection done and buy it blindly if it checks out as its hard for us to travel there from Whangerei. I have driven the AS200 and it handles nicely although I did not feel it had any more power than our old 1.8 Corolla.

I'm really stuck on which one to go towards. Both owners don't seem like boy racer types so these cars seem to be unmolested :)

Would love your opinion on this

The Toyota Altezza, 2.0L and 3.0L, are good vehicles that have a reputation for reliability. So either vehicle will be ok provided it has been looked after and the seller has traceable service records - especially for the cambelt replacement.

You need to consider fuel economy too as the AS300 will have better performance than the AS200 but the bigger motor will use more fuel.

It is never a good idea to buy a vehicle unseen, even if you get a pre-purchase inspection done, as your expectations for a 12 year old vehicle with 130,000kms on the speedometer will not be the same as the next person.

You should also ensure there is no financial interest on the vehicle - get a AA History report done too.
