I am a woman (60s) and I want to update my car with latest model possible. My budget is around 20,000-23,000. I am concerned with safety and reliability. I live in a rural town but frequently travel to Auckland (about an hour away). I would like a roomy automatic hatchback with at least 1.8 engine. Would you please suggest three or four models or makes that I could look at. A friend suggested a Ford Focus, or VW Golf. Would these be ones you would recommend?

A good friend would not suggest a VW, buy the Ford.......or better still a Toyota.

You could look at a 2009 - 2011 Mazda 3 with a 2.0L engine or a 2011-2012 Toyota Corolla with a 1.8L motor. These vehicles have a good reputation for reliability and it should meet your needs.
