We are thinking about getting a bigger car - something like a Falcon or Commodore in the $7K to $9K price range and were wondering:
a. what would be better an older car with moderate kms or a newer car with higher kms e,g, one a salesman has used.
b. At what point is high kms too high for the car to be worth buying without having major problems

The lower mileage should be preference and you should try avoid buying a vehicle with more than 150,000kms tops but in this price range you might struggle to find a low mileage large sedan.
