I was very keen on the Mercedes-Benz A160, and they seem good value relatively, but I have just found some bad reports on the web about the auto transmission. Maybe that explains their low price!

Please help me with these questions about the transmission:
1.   It seems the model was revamped in 2004 (?) and in terms of transmission it was standard auto before and CVT after (?). Are both versions suspect, or is the newer CVT better?
2.   Does tiptronic mean CVT? Many of the newer versions for sale on trademe label their transmission as this.
3.   How about the A170, it seems to have same body just bigger engine: does it have the same transmission issue? However, there is a big step up in price for the A170 on trademe.
4.   Is regular maintenance on these cars more expensive than standard maintenance for similar Japanese models? Can my regular mechanic just up the road look after it, or do I have to send it to some expensive Euro dealer every 6/12 months?
5.   If I buy, is it possible and worthwhile installing a little cooling radiator on the transmission oil? Did this on our Mitsy 14 years ago and never had any problems: seems to be very beneficial in extending the transmission life.
6.   If worst happens, what’s approx cost to replace a transmission on the A160?
Thanks heaps for your time to read and reply
Cheers

The A160 and A170 are known to have transmission issues; CVT and auto models. The repair and maintenance costs will be more than most used Japanese cars as you need to remember the Mercedes has a high price when it's new and this relates to higher parts pricing. The agents will be better equipped to carry out difficult diagnostic but for regular servicing the local mechanic should have no problem replacing the service items.

A transmission oil cooler is good to have especially for towing but it won't resolve the known problems.

I would expect the repair costs for a transmission on an A160 to be anything from around $4,000 and more.

You should rather avoid these models if possible.

Thanks for your advice: I will avoid.
So, as I liked the size and feel of the A160, and especially the elevated seating position, what similar Japanese make/model, 3 or 5 dr hatchback would you recommend for city runabout. I did also like the style of the RAV4, but found them relatively expensive to buy and don't need 4WD anyway. Will spend approx $8K. Reliability and economy are important, resale value is not as I would look to keep for a long time.
I appreciate your advice.

You could consider the Honda Edix. It has a 1.7L or 2.0L petrol engine and an interesting front row seat that can seat three. The seating position is elevated and the vehicle has a good reputation. The Toyota ist is also worth considering but newer models have CVTs so beware.

That Edix does look promising- will check it out tomorrow
