I am looking into buying a 1997 1.8 litre VW Passat.

Any tips you can offer me would help.

The Passat is not a bad car in my view but like most of the European brands they can be very costly to maintain.

If its NZ new, and has a proven and detailed service history, then it's worth considering. An import without a proven service history I would be a wee bit nervous about.

I know it sounds like a sales pitch, but I would strongly recommend an AA pre purchase inspection, and if you do decide to purchase, look at mechanical warranty insurance.

The automatic transmission is one big ticket item that could cost you plenty if it developed a problem.

I'm certainly not saying NO, just be very careful.
