Hello,
I'm looking for a reliable used car, generally for driving around/across town but also longer trips. I would really like a Toyota (I am replacing my 1992 corolla) due to their reliability, low running and repair costs and have been looking at corollas, vitz etc. My budget is around $4k-6k but I could go a bit higher if I found the right car. Ideally I would like a newer model with lower kms (automatic) as I want to upgrade. I've noticed you advise against anything with CVT and was wondering what you would recommend to look at? What is your opinion of Honda Fit /JAZZ or a civic?
Thank you

I think you're right to be looking at Toyotas and both Vitz/Eco and Corolla would be fine. As you say, we're wary of older model cars with CVT transmissions, and some of the Japanese import Toyotas had CVTs, although most don't.
The Honda Jazz/Fit is one of the main cars that concern us with CVTs. All models up to the end of 2008 had CVTs, and this was a transmission which gave trouble and unfortunately, your budget won't extend to a 2009 Jazz. The Civic is a good model, with NZ New examples having a traditional transmission, but again, some imports may be CVT.
So, in summary, go for a Vitz/Echo, Corolla or Civic - particularly if they're NZ new and with a conventional automatic transmission. Other models you could consider are Mazda Familia/323 or Nissan Pulsar.

Hi,
Thanks for your fast response. I'm going to look at a 2001 Vitz (turboed RS model, 110,000km) tomorrow that is listed on trademe for $5800. It's only a 3 door, and although I would prefer 5 door, it appeals as it has a more powerful motor than most cars of that size. However, I am not sure about the turbo aspect - I have been warned that if it has been driven 'hard' it may be problematic - what is your view on that?
Thank you

It depends on what you want in a car. If you're looking for high performance, then maybe this car would suit you. But to be honest, a 12 year old turbo is not really a car we'd recommend for reliability.

Thanks again.
I'm not looking for a high performance car as such, just something that can cope with hills about town as well as longer distance driving (eg Auckland to Whakatane). Was wanting something around 1600cc.
