I have been looking for a reliable hatchback around the $3000 - $6000 mark. I have been focussing on Corollas, Lasers, Civics and Familias but came across a well priced 97 used import Subaru Impreza.
The mileage is reasonable for its price at 127,000 km's and it has had only one Kiwi owner. It has been regularly serviced and is in excellent condition. I can't help but listen when people tell me that Subaru's have a tendency to break down a lot. Is this true?
I have just sold a car that cost me too much in repairs and don't want to make the same mistake.

You are buying into a fairly high risk part of the market particularly the closer you get to the $3,000 mark. That risk increases a little by purchasing a Subaru in comparison to other Japanese brands.
Because of their All Wheel Drive technology and unconventional engine design they can be more expensive to maintain. Fuel consumption will be higher as well.
A good and proven service record however is a bonus for a car of this age and provided items like cam belts have been changed you can't discount it completely.
I wouldn't say no, but be very careful. If you don't mind the bland and boring sometimes it's hard to go past the Toyota brand to be honest. Don't assume that every Toyota is bullet proof though, once again look for a proven service history.
Also check with your insurance company, sometimes they charge a premium to underwrite a Subaru.
