I'm looking at a 2009 Mazda Demio 13C-V with a CVT transmission. This model has an annual fuel cost of $1,200. The same model with a conventional automatic transmission has an annual fuel cost of $1,430.

I'm aware that CVT transmissions can be problematic in certain makes & models. I'm curious what sort of reputation, if any, the Demio CVT has? Any input would be much appreciated.

These figures are designed to give you a guide, but it's not an exact science and there are numerous variables, so I wouldn't get too hung up on a quoted difference of $230 per year ($4.40 per week).
Personally, I'd take the car with the conventional transmission over one with the CVT any time. Mazda NZ only offered this vehicle here (badged here as Mazda2) with the conventional automatic, and that would be my preference.
