Due to population growth, I'm intending to replace a 2000 Honda Avancier with a new-shape Odyssey for the extra seating. I don't want it to be completely pedestrian, hence the FWD Absolute spec (this also conveniently side-steps doubts about CVT)

I'm aiming for a fairly "creative" budget; what maximum mileage should I tolerate, and what known problems do these cars have?

I'm not 100% up to play with the import regulations - if I import directly, will the 2004 model comply or does it need to be newer?

Also what other makes and models of pseudo-sporty people mover should I consider (no SUVs though)?

Many thanks :)

The Honda Odyssey Absolute 2.4L normally has the 5-speed automatic transmission but there are some Odyssey models that have the CVT gearbox fitted to them. Stay away from CVT models.

Another 2WD MPV vehicle to consider is Mazda's 2.0L Premacy. The Mazda Premacy and Honda Odyssey come in seven seater versions, although they have lap-strap seat belts for the second row middle seat. The Premacy has a 4-speed or 5-speed automatic transmission fitted to it depending on the model.

These vehicles have good reputations for reliability. Look for a vehicle with as low a mileage as possible but that would depend on the budget. Anything under 100,000km will be a good mileage for this year model vehicle and try not go above 130,000km.A good traceable service history will also help provide some confidence in the vehicle.

For information regarding importing vehicles from Japan you can have a look at the NZTA Website. For further queries on importing please e-mail aatech@aa.co.nz. Do not purchase or ship a vehicle over to New Zealand without confirming if the vehicle will meet the necessary standards for entry certification or you might end up with a vehicle that is only good for spares.
