I would like to ask a couple of questions in relation to the purchase of a 1998 Toyota Prius.
I would like to know your thoughts in relation to the battery that assists in powering this car and ask whether the 1998 model has any problems I should know about before before buying.

To be frank, I would not buy a 10 year old Hybrid, especially a used import.
The hybrid technology is advancing at such a rapid pace that what is being manufactured in 2008 is way ahead of what was in production in 1998.
To be fair we don't hear of a lot of problems with the Prius however all the early hybrids are pioneers in the journey car manufactures are currently on to help reduce fuel consumption and tail pipe emissions.
Ten years is a long time with this type technology in my opinion.
The risk you run, I believe, is owing an orphan and a car which may be very hard to sell.
Your needs should be considered as well. If for example, you do a lot of highway driving then there may not be the benefits you are expecting. Around town in congested traffic or in a car park situation is where the Prius excels.
Loaded with gear on a long journey the 1.5 litre engine will be working quite hard which can result in fuel consumption no better than an equal size petrol vehicle.
Cost is another factor. Some of the hybrid prices I think are too expensive.
