I am in the market for a used car and have looked at a 1992 Nissan Pulsar. The seller says he bought it from a family friend a couple of years ago. I can't say I know much about cars so just wanted to know what your opinion is about these cars and their reputations / pitfalls.
The odometer says 142,000km's which does sound a lot and I did notice it has not had a service in a couple of years.
Is there anything you think is relevant that I need to know and ask the seller?
The asking price is $1600. I have undertaken a 20 minute test drive and it seemed OK.

If your budget will only stretch to $1,600 then the Nissan Pulsar is a very good choice. They have an excellent reputation for reliability and just as important they are very easy to work on and service.
I would not be too concerned about the odometer reading. Many vehicles of this age have odometers heading closer to the 200,000kms mark from my experience.
If you do decide to buy, a service would need to be a first priority so you need to be prepared to spent a little more money. All part of the car ownership experience I'm afraid. Also make sure the car undergoes and passes a Warrant of Fitness inspection before you commit to purchase.
This will ensure the major mechanical safety items are OK as well as the body is free of any major structural rust issues.
One last piece of advice, make sure the seller has no outstanding debt registered against the car and make sure the ownership gets changed into your name if you do purchase.
The debt issue is unlikely at this price but you never know. At least ask the question.
