I'm looking at updating my Station Wagon to another Station Wagon. I currently have a 1997 Legnum (2.0 litre V6) and wish to purchase a used station wagon of similar dimensional size, but more economical.

I'm looking at paying up to $15k. I'm willing to look at diesel cars, or petrol.

Can you make any suggestions as to a sound economical vehicle?

Economy and comfort are two key factors as I commute a 90km round trip each week day.

A tough question to be honest. I can't think of a diesel powered vehicle in your price range that I would recommend. Diesels have come a long way in recent times but in your price range I believe you would be looking at older technology with the potential to cost you plenty in service and general repairs. Add Road Charges and higher registration costs and I think petrol is a better option.

Safety is another consideration with the type of driving you are doing.

A couple of suggestions then;

Mazda6 - Practical, reliable, safe, great driving car and economical.
Toyota Avensis - Proven reliability.
Ford Mondeo - Worth a look for comparison purposes.

Apart from that, have you considered a SUV type vehicle. They have the room and many of them run in two wheel drive on the hard seal unless there is a loss of traction.

Options would be;

Toyota RAV4
Honda CRV
Nissan X-Trail (under rated and well priced)
Mazda Tribute
Ford Escape
