I would like to know if an isuzu 3lt diesel, turbo, auto, would be adequate to tow a caravan around the 2000kg mark & do you need a certified tow bar rating for this?, Ted

The 2012 year model Isuzu D-Max 3.0L diesel is rated to tow a 2500kg braked trailer. You will need to fit a suitable (approved for the towing weight) towbar to the vehicle. Older Isuzu vehicles were rated less than 2 ton (around 1700kg) for a braked trailer so you will need to be a bit more specific on which vehicle you are referring to. The 2012 Isuzu D-Max 3.0L diesel will not struggle to tow the 2 ton caravan/braked trailer.

i was considering a 1998 isuzu, however what other options as a tow vehicle for this size/weight of caravan would do?

If you are looking for a tow vehicle of the late 90's, the all time favourit the Toyota Landcruiser but as you probably know already, they are very hard to find for good money.
Good alternatives are the Pajero or the Challenger out of the Mitsubishi range, but make sure they are diesel.
If you don't mind to pay a bit more for petrol, then the Ford Territory or the Toyota highlander could be considered as well.
For towing though, the low end torque of the diesel, would be of great advantage.
