Toyota's Allion or Celica but I think the following vehicles will be better suited for a student. Nissan's Pulsar 1.5L-1.8L, Suzuki's Swift 1.4L-1.5L, Mazda's Demio 1.5L, Toyota's Vitz/Yaris 1.3L or Toyota's Passo/ Daihatsu Sirion 1.3L.

A smaller car with a 1.3L - 1.8L engine should be sufficient for a student to run from uni and home with little luggage. A 2.0L or larger engine will be heavy on fuel around town in stop/go traffic.

Maintenance and repairs are reasonable for these Japanese cars. Try avoiding cars fitted with CVT transmissions and direct injection engines as they are known to be problematic.
