Hi, we are looking into buying a SUV - maybe either a Holden Captiva or a Nissan Quashqai. Have either of these had any problems (late models 2010 or 2011) and how do they rate economy wise?? Or maybe you have idea on another reliable SUV model? Thanks

The Holden Captiva fitted with the 3.0L V6 petrol motor was known to stretch the timing chain. The diesel model is fitted with a particulate filter which can block up if the vehicle is not driven according to the conditions necessary to burn the soot. If you do a lot of motorway driving (at motorway speeds for long stretches) then this should not be a problem for you - but most diesels these days are fitted with a particulate filter. The Nissan Qashqai is smaller than the Holden and it could be fitted with a CVT transmission which can be problematic.

Other vehicles to consider is the Hyundai Sante Fe or iX35 and Mitsubishi's ASX or Outlander. If the budget allows for a 2012 model vehicle then Mazda's CX-5 is also a good option to consider. Economy wise the diesel option will be better but the petrol models are not too far behind.
