The Vectra was not Holden's finest hour. Unfortunately, it was a model that experienced reliability issues, electrical problems, high maintenance costs and is not generally well regarded.
It's not really a case of Holden or Honda being any better than each other, as Honda have had some less than impressive models too.
As a general sweeping statement, Japanese cars tend to be reliable, but there are still some models to avoid.
With Honda, during the era you refer to (ie, mid-2000's), the Jazz, Fit models with CVT transmissions suffered expensive transmission problems.
