Hi, I am down to 3 models of cars and want to find out what is best to buy in terms of initial purchase prices and then cost of running the car per year.

Cars I am looking at are 2-3 years old and the models are: VW Golf TDI, VW Polo GTI or Fiat 500 Sports or Arbath

Any thoughts?

These are all fantastic driver's cars, but it really depends on what you need in a car. Obviously, the Golf is quite a bit bigger than the other two, but the diesel engine is great, as is the 6 speed DSG transmission (assuming it's an auto).
While the Polo GTi is slightly smaller, it is a quality little car and drives very similar to the Golf.
The Fiat 500 Abarth was a car we found very entertaining to drive. Being very small, it is a car that feels faster than it really is, but definitely a car that induces plenty of smile-factor. It is only 3 door though.
So, which to buy? It's really your decision to decide what you want out of your car.
Ultimately, the Golf is probably considered the most "mainstream" so there may be more buyers when you come to sell - followed by the Polo and Fiat (in that order).
With all these being late model cars, reliability shouldn't be an issue at this stage.

I'd buy the GTI if you weren't too fussed about fuel consumption and the size. The TDI would be better for the daily commute and is bigger but the GTI the better drive and fun to drive.
