Is there a legal requirement to have a barrier behind the front seats of a van? We bought an ex tradesman van and took out the mesh cargo barrier. Is that ok?

No, there is no requirement for a van to have a barrier. As long as it was just a bolt in barrier and you haven't cut out something that was a structural part of the vehicle, removing a barrier should be fine.
