We're considering trading in our 2001 Landrover Discovery which has been somewhat underwhelming.
The Landrover Dealer has suggested a 2005 Disco with 98,000 on the clock for $50K with a 3 year warranty.
With the new KIA and Ssanyong ranges I wonder if we might be better off with a brand new car.

Any ideas on how we might compare?

Upgrading your Disco by a mere 4 years doesn't sound like the right option. The "new" one is still seven years old with the best part of 100,000km on the clock and a cynic might ask why the dealer is throwing in a 3 year warranty. Remember, the dealer could be responsible for failures under the Consumer Guarantees Act, so a warranty (or more correctly, mechanical breakdown insurance) protects him as well as you.
So, what to replace your aging Landy with?
Assuming you have a need for a largish SUV and also making the assumption that you prefer diesel (judging by your other choices) you could do a lot worse than the Kia Sorrento. At $49,990 the entry level Sorrento R 2WD is a pretty good, well priced package.
The Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Territory TDCi, Peugeot 4007 and Holden Captiva CRDi are other possibilities, but they're mostly slightly outside the budget.
The Nissan X Trail is another to consider, although it is a bit more agricultural than the others.
The Ssanyong is a relative newcomer to the market and is a little untested, plus not being a particularly well-recognised brand, depreciation is likely to be on the high side.
Perhaps a slightly used example of one of the models we've suggested could be a good option too.
Sorry if we've confused the issue by throwing numerous models into the mix, but as you can see, there is a lot to choose from out there.

Hi Andrew, Many thanks for the advice and for broadening our options. We're going to test drive the Kia Sorrento and the Peugeot 4007 to start with and see where we go from there.

Meanwhile we will get our LandRover fixed one last time in preparation for sale!

Your advice has really helped. Cheers Sarah
