Depends on the intended use, for a quick trip to the shop a 50cc will be adequate but not great, otherwise a 125cc will be a good option for extended use. You need to buy something that you are legally licensed to ride and will suite your needs. A comfortable seating position is important along with good ground clearance. Also look for space to store the helmet under the seat and storage space for other goods.

Good evening,
Im thinking to buy a scooter and I just wonder what do you need to register it? what type of documents do I need to ride it legally? Because previous owner didnt register it. What do I need to get from him?
Thank you in advance,
Kirill.

What make and size bike are you thinking of buying? Do you have a car or a bike drivers license? Was the bike ever registered on New Zealand roads? Is it a import? Does the current owner have papers to prove ownership?

Thank you for your reply!
The model of the bike is FT50QT-3 and it is 50cc engine. As I know I can use my car driver license for such engine.
Here is the response from the seller: “We have never registered the scooter. You need to take it to a compliance center. Once it is compiled they will give you an MR2A form, Take that form to AA and they will issue you your number plates. We did our homework to find this out ourselves. With a name like Futong i think it would be an import. We bought the bike off trade me ourselves it did not have paper work and we ended up not needing to use it”.
Is he right?
Thank you in advance,
Regards,
Kirill.

The seller has done his homework and what he is saying is almost correct but he failed to mention that you need the documentation/paperwork (ownership trail and statement of compliance if necessary) for the bike to be able to proceed with the compliance process. The bike would also need to meet/pass certain standards (differs dependant on the year model) before it would be given an MR2A. Why has the seller not done this? It raises too many questions as it would have made sense for the seller to do all of this to be able to sell the bike for more. Something doesn't sound right. You should rather walk away from this sale as it sounds like there is no paperwork for the bike and it possibly will not meet the necessary standards.
