Hi, Would really appreciate an expert opinion. Contemplating buying either a used mazda 3 hatch 2.0 litre sport version (2005-2007) or a brand new VW polo plus or a brand new Kia Rio ex. In a nut shell what would you do? Is a newer smaller vehicle with factory warranty and service plan worth an extra 8-10 thousand over a used higher spec vehicle with a 2 year mech warranty, no service plan. I know its a personal choice but interested in a 2nd opinion.

Other question was if I did opt for a used car. Whats your opinion on buying an older vehicle with less kms over buying a newer vehicle with higher kms. 2007 with about 80,000-100,000 kms looking about the same price range as 2005 with 30,000-40,000 kms. Thats around $17,000 NZD.

Much appreciated, Andy

If the budget runs to it, new is always best. You get a full manufacturer's warranty, which is much more extensive than any mechanical insurance policy that a used car dealer can sell you. There's the peace of mind on knowing the car from day one, plus manufacturers are usually accommodating in extended goodwill cover after the warranty has expired if you are the original owner. Also it's new :)

Regarding your second question, the difference in age of the car you are talking about is almost immaterial. I'd definitely go for the lower mileage car.

Thanks for your advice. Test drove and unfortunately really found that the polo and rio are too small for our needs. A new golf is nearly $40,000. Not sure I want to spend that amount on a car thats going to be worth half that in 4 years.

What's your opinion regarding 2004-2007 mazda 3's/axela's 2 litre version? Is there any other options you'd recommend for $16,500 or less? Reasonably economical all round, good reliability and slightly better on depreciation. I've heard horror stories about vw golfs in 2000-2004 bracket. Are they as horrifically expensive to maintain as many would suggest here in NZ? Is Japanese always cheaper to maintain and repair?

Really appreciate your help. Cheers

The Mazda3 or import Axela has a great reputation for reliability and is a good car to drive. It's a popular model, so depreciation isn't too bad either.
The MkIV Golf is known to have issues with the automatic transmission and one or two electrical problems. As a generalisation, Japanese cars are cheaper to maintain and repair.
