Hello Ross,
It can be a little confusing, as there are so many makes and models on the market these days.
The most popular and reliable new small cars at present would be Suzuki Swift, Toyota Yaris, Mazda2, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20.. the list goes on.
It really depends on your budget as to which models would fit your purpose. If you can give us an idea of budget, we can offer you some more specific recommendations.

OK, there are a number of options for you in this price range. Given that you are looking for a small, economical car, a few suggestions would be the Toyota Echo (or Vitz), Mazda Familia or Nissan Pulsar.
These three would be the most popular, reliable cars in this price range and you should be able to find a fairly good one for your money.
I'd suggest getting an AA Pre-purchase inspection, as you will be looking at cars around about the 2000 model year in this price range.

Thank you for that, yes most certainly get an AA check before buying any thing.
Once again thanks for the advise.
