how often do batteries need changing

There is no scheduled time frame for the replacement of the hybrid battery. The battery will need replacing when it fails or has been damaged in an accident, as with all batteries there will be a limited life when it will eventually need replacing. The New Zealand New Prius sold by Toyota NZ, have a 8 year/160,000km (whichever comes first) warranty, Toyota NZ have not replaced a NZ new Prius battery to date, there has been reports of imports that have needed batteries replaced. I would however, suggest you stay clear of hybrid's that are more than 8 years old or used imports, the hybrid technology has advanced over time and is more efficient than previously seen in the older vehicles, you will not benefit much from a vehicle that has 8 year old hybrid technology.
