Hi. I have a 1994 Mitsubishi Chariot 2400cc 4WD which I would like to upgrade. I occasionally tow a braked trailer, about 1000kg, and don't often use the extra 2 seats the Chariot has. I have been looking at the Nissan Liberty which seem good value for money, but I'm not sure about the suitability of the transmission for towing. It seems some models have the CVT transmission which I understand is not suitable for towing, and others have a normal 4 stage auto, but some say this is only on the 4WD models which I don't need as towing is mostly on the flat and short distances. I have also considered a Toyota Gaia and Toyota Wish but have not viewed any as yet, and they seem more expensive than the Nissan. My wish list is - about 2000 to 2004, under 70,000km, up to $10,000, and 1800 or 2000cc. The higher seating position of these vehicles is also high on the list. I would appreciate your thoughts and any advice. Many thanks. David
The CVT transmission is not suitable for towing and models with a CVT from this era did not enjoy a great reputation for reliability. If you do not have a need for 4WD, there's no point in going down that track either.
The Toyota models you mention, along with the Toyota Ipsum may be the best options for you. Toyota vehicles are generally a little more expensive due to them having a good reputation for durability and reliability, so they are in demand. The positive aspect to this is that they should retain their value better too, so when it comes time for you to sell, you should also be able to realise a higher price.
These vehicles all have a relatively high seating position and you should be able to find something that meets all the criteria you mention within your price range if you are patient.
