Hi Jack

We are looking at upgrading our 2.4L Camry Altise with a 7 seater. We quite like the look of the Outlander/Challenger, Captiva or the Toyota Highlander (although I think this option will be a bit too thirsty). We are not keen on the look of the Odyssey or Previa/Estima type vehicles but would still consider them. Our budget is $30k. What would you recommend in this price range and what year/km's is good value for money? It won't be used every day (or for great distances) as a 7 seater but would still like to have the option there so if it is a bit cramped back there then that doesn't matter. The extra boot space with the second row folded is also appealing for long trips (although think the Captiva is lacking there...???). Fuel economy would probably be a big consideration. I see the Outlander comes as a 2.0L. Will this still perform well on long trips? Don't need 4WD at all (does this increase the running costs/maintenance of the car?). I guess what I am saying is if we see a 4WD in our price range should we avoid it? Do all rear seats have anchor points for carseats or can they only be placed in certain positions? I would be interested to hear you opinions on these and any other types of vehicles you think we should consider.

Thanks,
Rebecca

You have obviously done a reasonable amount of homework and narrowed down the type of vehicle you are looking for.
Eliminating the specific people movers such as the Previa/Odyssey etc (as there's no point in buying a vehicle you don't really llike!), your best option is an SUV type vehicle.
Four wheel drive vehicles will generally be a little less fuel efficient, and if you don't have a need for 4x4, then a 2wd vehicle that fits the bill may suit your needs best, however, don't completely rule out a 4x4. Of the models you have mentioned, the Outlander is the one that ticks the most boxes for you.
The 2.0 litre Outlander is available in 2wd and 7 seat, but may feel a little under-powered, depending on your expectation.
Perhaps it would be best for you to drive the 2.0 litre 2WD Outlander and a 2.4 4X4 Outlander to come to your own conclusions about which you prefer.
