Hi. I am very intrigued by the clever technology of the latest Golfs especially the diesels and also the TSI models. While I drive a company Honda and have absolutely no problems with it, it does not appear to have the class, ride, handling and smarts of these latest VWs. Being close to retirement with a need to buy a vehicle am I looking in the right direction?

The Volkswagen Golf would rate as one of the most enjoyable driver's cars available in the relatively mainstream pricing bracket.
The DSG transmission offers positive, direct gearshifts and lacks the slip effect you experience with some transmissions.
As diesel engines go, Volkswagen produce some great engines. However, unless you plan on doing high mileage, the TSI would perhaps be the preference. These engines produce good power, torque and remarkable fuel efficiency with low emissions.
Long term ownership of European cars can be more expensive than the mainstream Japanese models, but the driving experience can make that worthwhile. Ultimately, it's a personal choice about what you want from your car.
