The AA conducts running cost surveys annually, and current running costs for a large diesel vehicle and a large petrol vehicle are running virtually neck and neck.
As a generalisation, for a smaller or medium sized passenger car, diesel only gains an advantage if you are travelling a high mileage. However, larger petrol SUV's depreciate badly, so in this instance, diesel would still be the preference even with a vehicle travelling a lower mileage.

Thanks very much for that, looks like it is time for me to upgrade to a 4x4 diesel...
