We are looking at purchasing a Volkswagen Golf that has around 100 000 km on the clock but has not had the cam belt replaced according to the current owner. What would be the approximate cost be for replacing a cam belt in this model vehicle? (A friend of ours paid $1000 for their volkswagen passet cam belt to be replaced) Thanks for your assistance

A figure of around $1,000 would not surprise me. The belt is sometimes the least expensive of the parts required once these sorts of jobs are started.

Expect a new water pump to be recommended as part of the job (it is driven by the cambelt) as well as a check of the cooling system in general.
