I'm totally new to cars so please forgive my ignorance :)

I'm looking to buy a 2002-2004 Primera. I've read that the CVT can be unreliable so I'm looking for an auto or a manual. How can I tell what sort of auto transmission the car has?Is the tiptronic also a CVT?

I'm basically looking for a car under $10k for driving in the inner city during the week and driving up to Whangarei every weekend so it has to be economical but with the back up grunt for open road driving.

Please help me :)

If you’re buying from a Dealer then it’s simply best to ask the question up front, they cannot misrepresent the car and have to tell the truth if asked.

A visit to any garage should also quickly identify the type of transmission fitted.

If it gets confusing I suggest you have a look at the Toyota's in this price range as most are very basic, easy to service and very reliable.
