Hi , i recently crashed my car and and therefore in need of a car. i have been looking on aacarfair and Trademe and quite liked the legacy gtb, manual transmission. the car has done approx 90,000km, person is selling for $15k, is the car worth that much. it is in pretty good condition and comes with a 2 yr "drive right" warranty, not sure what this is? what are some of the common problems i could face with this car due to high mileage etc? car was first registered in nz this year so i m guessing its not nz new. what would be the fuel consumption like? maintainence etc? security and theft problems?any information that would help me would be much appreciated.

cheers

OK, so by my reckoning thats 6 questions in one, so I'll answerr them in the order you have raised them!
1) Value - According to the Red Book valuation guide, the price seems fair.
2) Drive Right Warranty -.This type of warranty is an insurance policy, so like any insurance, you should check what is covered. There is likely to be an excess and a maximum claim limit, so check what these are too.
3) Problems / reliability - We are aware of some Subaru models suffering overheating and head gasket problems, however Subaru technical people tell us that this particular engine generally doesn't suffer these problems. However, as this engine is turbo-charged, regular servicing, maintenance and oil changes are vital, with the result being bottom end (bearing) damage if not serviced regularly. One risk with an import is that you do not know how well it has been serviced in the past.
4) Fuel consumption - This is likely to be an issue with this model, being an All Wheel Drive performance model. I would expect fue consumption to be in excess of 10L/100km.
5) Maintenance - General servicing is not likely to be excessive, however, being AWD and turbo, there is the potential for additional maintenance over and above that of a conventional 2WD non-turbo car.
6) Security / theft - This has long been a concern with Japanese Import Subaru models, as the Japanese domestic market models diid not have alarms and imobilizers which were fitted as standard on NZ new models. Also the GTB is a favourite with joy riders and boy racers. However, we're told that from about 2004, Japanese market GTB's had these anti-theft devices, but it would pay to check on a case by case basis to be sure.

I hope this is of help.
