I am considering buying a Mitsubishi Lancer from the 2007 or 2008 model years (i.e. the earlier examples of the current generation). I will be buying NZ new, prefer the VR or VRX variants, and I'm hoping that I can find one with under 75,000km for around the $20k ballpark.

My main priority is safety and I note that the Lancer has a five star NCAP rating unlike many other vehicles of this age in the small-mid size category. However, I was wondering whether ESP is standard across the range or whether it's something that is only fitted to more recent examples or to more expensive variants of the current generation Lancer.

I must admit I also like the sporty looks of this vehicle. In terms of intended usage I do about 8,000km per year and the vast majority of that is open road driving - I very rarely drive around town. It would usually only be driven with one or two occupants so cabin and cargo space doesn't need to be huge.

Any thoughts?

This vehicle scored very well in crash testing and as you say is rated higher than many other vehicles of a similiar age.

Check out the link to the actual test result which would indicate ESC is in fact standard.

Overall the Lancer is a very underated vehicle and does provide very good value for money.

Thanks, Jack. That is reassuring reading.
