Retirement is coming up and I'm thinking of seeing more of NZ. I'd like a small, reliable comfortable 4WD with excellent fuel efficiency. Used would be fine, and I'm also wondering whether not to buy, but just to rent a vehicle when I need it). Any advice or recommendations?

You don’t give a guide as to your budget so we have assumed it’s a used vehicle rather than brand new that you are looking at.

If you are planning to stick to the main tourist routes with the occasional maintained metal road we would question the need for a full on 4WD vehicle.

Vehicles such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, Nissan X-TRAIL, Hyundai Tucson would all do the job for you.

Renting a vehicle only as transport is required does have its merits however, you would need to use alternative transport the majority of the time to turn this into a financial benefit.
