Hi, What is the recommended way to pay. We suggested bank check but the seller said they have had a bad experience with bank checks and would prefer cash ($8800 is too much to carry around cash) or direct debit into his bank account. Note we are buying this car privately.
What do you recommend?
I think we have discovered an agreeable solution: Both parties turn up at the bank and make the transaction in person. Luckily both accounts are at the same bank.

Problem solved. Make sure you make the same effort to change the registered owners details. Go to your nearest NZTA agent such as a AA centre, Post Office or Vehicle Testing Station to complete the necessary forms.
I'm not sure what the problem was with a bank cheque. I’m with you on not wanting to walk around with over $8K in cash.
Hopefully you have done checks to make sure there is no money owing on this car as well.

Yes we got a vehicle history report and a pre-purchase inspection.
Do we change the registered owner details before the bank transaction? I was planning to to this online the day before we meet to pay and take the car.
