have about $4,000.
What do you think of susuki vitara's or escudos??/

I think the Vitara or Escudo would be an excellent choice with your limited budget.

They do suffer from timing chain rattle at times which can be expensive to repair fix but that is a pretty easy check (a trained ear when the engine is running).

And for 4K, the best you can hope for with any vehicle is it is free of major problems at the time of inspection.

Whatever happens going forward is in the lap of the gods.

Stay away from old Diesels in this price range.
