I am looking to purchase a Toyota Prado 1996-2002, but have been advised that if I purchase one that has been a Japanese used import, then the suspension and cylinder head could need replacing.
Is this a real issue or not?

Hi Ian,
I'm not sure why a Japanese used import would be any different than a poorly serviced NZ new Prado.
History tells us that regular servicing is not a high priority for owners in Japan so lack of attention to the cooling system can come back to bite future NZ owners.
No different for vehicles sold new in NZ.
Cylinder head issues are normally caused by a cooling system problem of some sort, so keeping the radiator clean, the system leak free and the correct inhibitor added is very important.
I am a real fan of only adding genuine or approved inhibitor and to have it changed as per manufacturers recommended intervals.
Regarding the suspension, I have never heard of specific issues with used imports to be honest.
NZ new or import, assume nothing and get the vehicle you are keen on checked out before you commit to purchase.
Even then there are no guarantees but it does eliminate the obvious
