I am looking at buying a big family car as the Toyota Estima/Previa.

The prices on the market varies a lot from dealer to dealers, same year same odometer reading but the prices are very different...don't know how to choose.

The budget is about 12000-17000, what year and what kind of condition car can we get for that price?

For more money I would be expecting very few issues with it once bought and the overall condition should be reasonable good. For a cheaper car I would expect them not as good as the higher priced one but don't want any problem with it either, i.e., have to spend $1000-2000 to fix something after few months etc.

Any other brand/model is recommended?

I suggest you pay your local Toyota Dealer a visit. It sounds like you are looking for the peace of mind they should be able to offer. You may pay a bit more but they do offer extended warranties and present their vehicles very well.

The Honda Odyssey is another popular family vehicle that may appeal.
