Hi We are looking at buying a second hand wagon (10-20K) for our family of four. As we commute into Dunedin over the Northern Motorway, AWD is appealing – as is the option of weekend explorations into the interior of the SI. Top choices so far are Subaru Outback (2.5) and Mazda Atenza (23S) with AWD. Both automatics, in the 80-90 KMs range.
Do you have any advice regarding the fuel economy of these two vehicles, compared with a 2WD Atenza? Would they run ok on regular?
Do they both operate with the AWD permanently enabled, but on 2WD until the AWD is required?
Advice appreciated.
Cheers.
We don’t have a lot of information on the AWD Atenza however we do rate the 2WD model highly in terms of reliability and value for money and it runs OK on 91 octane.
No bad luck stories have been uncovered from our technical sources regarding the AWD models which does not surprise us to be honest so it gets the tick of approval based on no news being good news.
Subaru have worked very hard in recent times to reduce fuel consumption in their new models however, in your price range you are going to have to accept the older technology which means increased fuel costs. The recommended fuel for the earlier Subaru’s is 95 octane.
Either of these vehicles would suit your lifestyle and do the job really well.
I can understand your reasons for wanting AWD but the reality is the fuel consumption will suffer in comparison to 2WD or passive 4WD where drive to the rear is only provided when the front drive wheels start to slip.
The Subaru definetly runs a true AWD system but I'm not sure about the Mazda to be honest.
Other makes/models to consider may be the Hyundai Tucson, Toyota Rav4, Honda CRV or Nissan X-TRAIL. All operate the more passive 4WD system.
Be careful however some of the used imports can be 2WD only.
